I4.0: AI and Machine Learning

This is the course page for the lectures on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and Human Computer Interaction in the Master Industry 4.0 Design offered by the University of Pisa.

Lecture 1: 25/01/2020 (AI and Machine Learning)

In this lecture I will introduce the fundamental theoretical and methodological concepts related to contemporary machine learning. The lecture begins with an abbreviated history of artificial intelligence and a (necessarily) high-entropy overview of the mathematical foundations needed to contextualize the recent developments in machine learning. Then we will see how to approach problems of supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and finally the thorny problem of the bias-variance tradeoff and model selection. This lecture will be complemented by a series of laboratory exercises.

Lecture 2: 07/02/2020 (Human Computer Interaction)

In this lecture I will give a high-level overview of the fundamental concepts of Human Computer Interaction and Human Centered Design in practice. I will start with a very brief overview of the history of HCI and its importance as modern discipline and its fundamental multi-disciplinary nature. Then we will look at the two principal tools of needfinding and usability analysis that can be applied to nearly any design problem with humans in the loop.
