Pietro Pala Database Sys and Image / Video Analysis

Pietro Pala teaches Database Systems and Image and Video Analysis at the University of Florence. His current research activity targets the analysis of 3D data for person identification and action recognition.

Pietro Pala received the Ph.D. in Information and Telecommunications Engineering in 1997 at the University of Firenze, Italy. Presently, he teaches Database Systems and Image and Video Analysis at the course of Informatics Engineering of the University of Firenze. Pietro Pala is currently the President of Bachelor and Master Degrees in Informatics Engineering at the University of Firenze.

His research activity has focused on the use of pattern recognition models for multimedia information retrieval and biometrics. Former studies targeted the definition of elastic models for measuring shape similarity and support shape based retrieval in image databases. From these studies, a number of different yet related topics were investigated, including image segmentation, content based description and retrieval of color images, multidimensional indexing structures for retrieval by color and shape, semantic content description in paintings and advertising videos, description and similarity matching of 3D models, segmentation of 3D models. Recently, the research activity focuses on the analysis of 3D data for person identification and activity recognition.

Pietro Pala serves as editor for Multimedia Systems and as reviewer for many leading scientific journals including IEEE Trans. on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, IEEE Trans. on Multimedia, ACM Trans. on Multimedia Computing Communications and Applications and Pattern Recognition.
