Long Bio
Tiberio Uricchio received his Master’s degree cum laude in Computer Engineering from the University of Florence in 2012 with the thesis “Learning to tag images”. He received his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Florence in 2016 with the thesis “Image understanding by socializing the semantic gap”, which was awarded as the best thesis in the technological class of the University of Florence and published as a book in 2018.
From 2016 to 2021, he worked at the Media Integration and Communication Center (MICC), University of Florence, as a Research Fellow. His research interests included image and video understanding, social media analysis and machine learning. He was a teaching assistant for the Visual and Multimedia Recognition course taught by Prof. Alberto Del Bimbo and co-supervised several Master’s theses.
During his years at MICC, he collaborated extensively on technology-transfer projects involving startups and international companies, including Leonardo S.p.A., working on artificial intelligence, video analysis, face recognition, person re-identification and applications for mobile devices. He also developed collaborations with Renmin University in China, the University of Amsterdam and the National University of Singapore.
He was involved in research on social image tagging and presented tutorials at ACM Multimedia 2015, CVPR 2016 and ICIAP 2017. He also presented a tutorial on memory networks at ACM Multimedia 2022. In 2019, he received the Best Demo Award at ACM Multimedia for research on video quality enhancement using generative adversarial networks.
In 2020, he co-founded Small Pixels, an innovative startup and University of Florence spin-off. He has also taught courses on deep learning, computer vision and Digital Humanities.
He is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa.
